THE BOSS LADIES OF VUNGA WASHING STATION
The world over, women do a lot of the labour- intensive work involved in producing coffee. They generally have far less control and ownership of the most valuable elements of the coffee trade and are rarely in decision making roles.
In step the GIRL BOSSES of the Vunga Washing station that produce this outstanding coffee.
Established in 2009, Vunga washing station is located in the Nyabihu District in Western Rwanda. Vunga has three highly regarded and strong-willed women in management positions.
Daphrose Uwimana - President
Geltrude Mukangarambe - Advisor
Christine Uwurukundo - Secretary
The governing board is only allowed to sit when at least one of these women are present and no decisions can be made without Daphrose. DAMN STRAIGHT.
Of the 260 farmers who deliver cherry to Vunga washing station, a third of them are women; this may seem like a small number, but for Rwanda this kind of representation is fantastic.
CHANGE IS A POWERFUL THING.
