celebrating the life of

We’re incredibly honoured to share this stunning washed Kenyan microlot with you from the Kiambu county, grown by the wonderful Penninah W. Mwangi of the Gichuna Estate.

We worked closely with Giovanna rocha from mare terra importers, who sent us a sample while coffee hunting in Kenya, knowing it would be right up our street!  before we had even finished cupping this coffee we were on the phone to Giovanna placing our order, we just had to have it to share with you all!

since our initial purchase of this coffee, penninah has sadly passed away, so here we have the final 3 bags of this amazing coffee grown by penninah.

Penninah was born in 1930 in what is today Ruiru Town - a small town outside Nairobi which was pretty much countryside back then.

She met her husband Mwangi there in Ruiru and after they got married, they moved further upcountry in 1953 and established Gichuna Estate, which made her only 23 at that time!

All her 7 kids were born at the farm and she spent her life there and through the earnings from the farm put all 7 children through college.

Penninah and her husband farmed together up until the mid 80's when Mwangi died and she carried on farming, keeping the the original farm in operation up to her last days.
